Q. I am still confused about copyright date vs. date of publication. I cannot quite decide what is the determining factor.
A. The determining factor is that you are looking for a publication date. This takes precedence over any copyright date. It is a date without the word copyright in front of it or a lower case c or the copyright symbol in front of it. Also, it is not the printing date. If you do not find such a date, then you look for a copyright date. If no dates are given, then you must make one up. Look very closely at all the fine print on the t.p. verso, there could be several possibilities for date. Dates are always a source of confusion with all cataloging.
